Des oriflammes, des banderoles aux slogans comme « I’m Gay and Normal » ou « l’homophobie tue » étaient fiérement brandis par les quelque 300 participants au défilé du collectif Arc- en- Ciel. Participation timide mais qu’importe le nombre, « c’est le symbole d’être là, à faire cette marche, qui compte ! » , souligne Nicolas Ritter, directeur de PILS. Audrey Kelly, vice- présidente du Collectif, confie que c’est le qu’en- dira- t- on qui a retenu les gens. Faire tomber les masques, apprécier la différence en brisant les tabous, ne sont pas encore du goût des Mauriciens. Mais des curieux assistaient, de loin, au défilé. Comme pour essayer de comprendre ces lesbiennes, gays, bisexuels et transgenres ( LGBT). Un visiteur inattendu : Monseigneur Piat, qui passait par là… en voiture, sans toutefois s’arrêter.

Les Fifi, Baby, Govani et autre Kelly, arborant fiérement leur identité, ont tous fini la journée en beauté, à l’ Indigo Night Club à Quatre- Bornes.

Toute publicité est-elle bonne à prendre ? Notre île est aujourd’hui citée, par presque toute la presse indienne, pour être celle qu’ont choisie deux Sud-africains pour leur lune de miel. Le problème, c’est que le couple homosexuel s’est uni selon les rites « hindous ». Ce qui dérange les chefs religieux d’Afrique du Sud et de l’Inde.

Ainsi, Joe Singh et Wesley Nolan, tous deux âgés de 21 ans, sont entrés dans l’histoire comme étant le premier couple gay à avoir été uni selon les rites millénaires. Le prêtre a presque tout suivi à la lettre : « hawan », le feu cérémonial, et la marche autour du feu. Les Indiens expatriés de la communauté gay ont félicité le couple sur les différents blogs qui viennent de reprendre la nouvelle. L’histoire des amoureux est toute bête : Joe Singh est Sales Advisor dans une entreprise de Durban. Il a flashé sur son manager Wesley Nolan, il y a presque deux ans.

Mariage contesté
Si les deux ont choisi un mariage hindou, c’est parce qu’ils sont croyants. Le collier du
dieu Ganesh autour du cou de Joe Singh, c’est pour « ward off evil ». Alors pourquoi pas le « thali », que le mari attache autour du cou de sa femme ? Les deux expliquent que ce serait « inapproprié » car « we are both husbands ».

Les parents de Wesley Nolan étant contre, la cérémonie a dû se faire chez le beau-père de Joe Singh, Krish Govender. Vu le scandale, le prêtre tamoul n’a pas voulu rendre son nom public, pour ne pas avoir affaire aux intégristes.

Mais beaucoup contestent ce mariage, dont le président de la South African Hindu Maha Sabha, Ashwin Trikamjee. Il explique que ces rites ne s’appliquent que pour un couple hétérosexuel. « The essence of the Hindu marriage is the fact that before the marriage proper takes place the parents have to formally consent to their daughter, called ‘kanya’ in Sanskrit, to be married to a male », lâche-t-il.

Le président de la South African Tamil Federation, Mickey Chetty, ne reconnaît pas non plus cette union, célébrée par un prêtre tamoul. Les activistes des droits humains, eux, soutiennent que les lois sud-africaines reconnaissent les mariages homosexuels. La mère de Joe Singh, Rita Govender, est montée au créneau en insistant sur le fait que c’est elle qui a voulu d’un mariage traditionnel. « I did not want them to live in sin. They are humans and deserve to lead a normal life », fait-elle ressortir.

Après leur lune de miel à Maurice, Wesley Nolan et Joe Singh veulent adopter un enfant, afin de vivre comme un couple normal.

A mauritian student accused of killing his ex-boyfriend by setting him on fire “reacted stupidly” in lying to the police but had nothing to do with the attack, a court has been told.

Nadim Kurrimbukus, 24, is on trial for the murder of Charlie Davies, who died 12 days after being doused in petrol and set alight outside his home in Templedene Avenue, Staines, on June 14 last year.

Summing up the case at Kingston Crown Court on Wednesday, David Williams QC, defending Kurrimbukus, said the defendant told a series of lies to detectives in interviews shortly after the incident.

“Once somebody has told an untruth to the police it is quite difficult to un-pick it,” he said.

“That is his case in a nutshell – he reacted stupidly to the situation that occurred. He told one story and had to stick by it.”

The court has previously heard that Kurrimbukus denied being in Templedene Avenue at the time of the attack but later admitted he had been there minutes before Mr Davies, 23, was set on fire.

He said he had lied because he was “distraught” after hearing what had happened to his former lover and realising “it looked bad” that he had been in the area at the time.

“Not a seasoned criminal”

Mr Williams told jurors that the lack of forensic evidence against either Kurrimbukus or his co-defendant, Yusuf Dulloo, was the key to the defence’s case.

“There is not one piece of forensic evidence which assists the Crown in advancing the case against Mr Kurrimbukus,” he said.

“This is a man of previous good character; this is not a seasoned criminal. With that in mind, where is the trail that he left? Where are the clothes that he wore on that night?”

Mr Williams added that Kurrimbukus had been on good terms with Mr Davies in the weeks leading up to the attack, including on May 13, a date when the two defendants are also accused of setting fire to a car belonging to Mr Davies’ mother.

The court heard that Kurrimbukus sent a text message to Mr Davies on the afternoon of the arson attack which said: “I miss you Mr Davies. Have had an amazing time with you.”

Mr Williams said: “The Crown say this is a nasty, vindictive attack by a man whose life was in a downward spiral. This message doesn’t even begin to be consistent with what the Crown say was in this man’s mind on May 13.”

“Dreadful and bizarre”

Dulloo, 27, who is accused of driving his co-defendant to the scene of the arson and the murder and knowing what was going to happen on both occasions, was manipulated by Kurrimbukus and had no reason to want to hurt the victim, said his defence barrister, Edward Rees QC.

“What was done to Charlie Davies was dreadful and bizarre,” he said. “It suggests a level of hate that is so beyond normal human experience that it is difficult to comprehend.

“It is hard enough to understand how one person could want to do it – it is incomprehensible that a second man would get involved.

“Nadim inhabits a deep and dark psychological terrain. He was going to do it regardless. He was so determined, do you not think he would use anyone if it suited his purpose?”

Mr Rees claimed that Kurrimbukus “groomed” Dulloo, who was outside his normal circle of friends, to be his unwitting assailant and drive him around because he did not have a full driving licence.

“He [Dulloo] is not assertive, he is pleasant and helpful, has never been in any trouble with the police and most importantly he is not worldly-wise,” he said.

“Nadim needed a driver and he needed companionship. He does this to people.”

Kurrimbukus, of Heath Road, Hounslow, and Dulloo, of Ashton Gardens, Hounslow, deny murder and arson.

The trial continues.

Today, we came across a piece that reiterates much of the same: Mauritius still maintains a colonial era ban on homosexuality, the majority of society doesn’t approve, What’s different about this particular piece is that it focusses on the idea of faggotry as a punishment – that is, gay men and women often feel that they’re paying the price for a wrong-doing. Homos, then, tend to eschew one another.

Yes, there are gay clubs and bars and the such, but no neighborhoods like Chelsea or Brighton, for gays fear being collectively stigmatized. Fear may permeate gay life in Mauritius, but not all gays live in such terrified conditions.
