ex-Special Mobile Force (SMF) claims he was beaten
Teenager quits and complains to police

An ex-Special Mobile Force (SMF) recruit, Yashil Jugdeb, 19, claims he was the victim of brutality by a superior during his training.
Mr. Jugdeb joined the SMF on January 5 and was enrolled for training. Since a young boy, he had dreamed of joining the MPF.
But five weeks later, on February 21, he alleges that an inspector in charge of training lashed out at him and beat him for no apparent reason. He made a statement at the police post of the Jeetoo Hospital. He also sent a resignation letter to the SMF.
The recruits, says Mr Jugdeb, had to climb the Piton de la Petite-Riviere-Noire and after the exercise, they were asked to run another four kilometres.
“I was out of breath and the prospect of running another four kilometres was daunting. However, I had to listen to the orders and I started running. There was not much energy left in the tank and I found myself last of the group,” says the young man.
The training instructor was also running with the group and according to Mr. Jugdeb, he got angry because the new recruit was dropping behind.
“He stopped running and he started swearing at me. He shoved me and then he went into some kind of a fit.
“I received several blows on my back. I was kicked on my backside and he have me several blows to my body with a stick he found there,” claims Yashil Jugdeb. He was then ordered to rejoin the group and keep on running.
Arriving at a slope, the instructor allegedly threw stone at teh recruit, although none hit him. The inspector picked up a stick and allegedly gave Yashil Jugdeb another beating. He again rejoined the group. There was about 200 metres left to run.
“I received five to six blows to my head with the stick. I started running again but after 10 metres, I crashed to the ground. I lost consciousness for a short time and when I came back to my senses, I was being dragged by the inspector on to the road. He left me there.
“Then two constables came and gave me some water,” claims the former police recruit. After the day’s training, Yashil Jugdeb returned home but did confide in his parents. However, they later noticed marks on their son’s body.
They took him to the hospital for treatment, after which he made a police statement. An investigation has been launched to enquire into the circumstances of the incident, which has done little to enhance the reputation of the Mauritian Police Force.
