I am a Mauritian student and i recently travelled to the UK on transit. They gave me a visa but bombarded with questions. They even asked me how many bones are there from the ankle to the toe. They seem to illtreat you in front of people from different countries. But in a way,i see that it will be good to reintroduce the UK visa system for Mauritians. At least,we are not going to get illtreated in front of the british people and other foreigners.
It's a truth that Mauritians have always dreamt of going to Uk to make money and that too at any expense even without good knowledge of English language. I have met many mauritians in Uk , they sweep floors in the airports, some wash cars and some even clean toilets. This is a shame for Mauritians who illegally enter the Uk .They prefer to be the servants of the British than serving their own country.

No no no-you can't undestand my point of view-probably as i'm from a different background expressing a viewpoint that certainly seems alien to you. How can i hate Britain-the country of my birth and for that matter my mother tongue? I spend 4-5 months over there every year as i miss it there and am fortunately able to divide my time between here and there- I don't pretend to have a British passport though it is i understand seen to be one of the most highly valuable precious artefact for the lay mauritian. It seems that you cannot imagine or believe England has a disgused hypocrisy where it concerns non -whites. I am not anti-British and i am most grateful for the education that i have been priviledged and i might say entitled to. However coming from a part of England which is indeed predominantly white and Christian though Christianity in Britain i have to say is seriously waning, i aswell as all members of my family have experienced undeniably strong discrimination, racism and bullying which simply one would not encounter over here. By the way where does anti-christian come into this agenda???Unless one has experienced it one cannot perceive because these types of cases do not exist here. Myself ,my husband, my sister and bro-in law not to mention my parents have each and every one of us have and are paying taxes of around 1000 pounds stirling (each) every month and yet even though born over there remain as second class citizens in the whites' eyes. Where is the respect that is our due? We drive luxury cars which the whites here cannot understand how that has come about- my mum tells them when she sees them looking disapprovingly: "we've worked hard for this." We work damn hard-and have to prove ourselves constantly 10 times more than them. Betwen them when they ponder the spelling of a word they ignore us when we know the correct answer as on the whole we are more intelligent yet they deny the fact and always try to keep us 'in our place'. As a doctor my sister faces racism daily whereby patients do not want to be seen to by her. As a Cambridge grad her peers treat her with indifference. Had that had been one of their own they wouldn't be able to keep from bragging. There's so much negativity, jealousy, contoversy etc. It is a white world, white supremacy is very much in your face. The area where we are from is voted no. 1 in the entire UK for its quaity of life, quality of education and boasts the top proffessionals aswell as a millionaires' haven. When president Obama was elected i witnessed how there was an uproar between the whites in a local supermarket. They don't hide their feelings over here. My sister and i were merely used as statistics in school as is my brother for the time being and were never acknowledged in the way that our counterparts were. By getting higher results, we were not presented with the prizes which had already been predestined for the others. My parents backed us up and attempted to take the matter further but no joy. We were not made to feel free to express our cultural identity-had we been brought up in London then you could say that would've been different. Not everywhere in Britiain is bad-quite the contrary but such places as these do exist and the injustices naturally unfair. Since my sister and i had no wish to date English guys and were not conformists to our peers we were then labelled as lesbians. Fasting the month of Ramadhan was something they found ridiculous-teachers and all. This is an elite private school with the kind of whites who are in powerful aristocratic positions who are intolerant of those not in the same league as them. And that is only the beginning. All this had ultimately made me want to give up my cultural heritage and want to be something i'm not-white. It wasn't until i started
uni that everything was fine-but then again i went to king's College London so some of the types i encountered earlier were also here.
I do not agree with the comment that all mauritians are doing better than the so called 'rathole' i presume you label your country with. I f you call it so then the reason for its being is your own-wise up yourself. A lot of the backward way of thinking about Mauritius is unfortunately from those people with little or no education who still believe this country should be under British rule. For them to show a bit of determination, hard work and effort to better themselves in their own homeland to thus prosper themselves and the country is not a notion they hold with as these types of people are most often lazy and ignorant. Jobs they wouldn't dare to hold here they are yet willing to do in the UK or elsewhere thinking they're going to make it big and come back here, splash the cash and then buy real estate-come on get real. Then there's those who are leading good lives here but thinking the grass is greener, take off to Canada only to find themselves in the most remotest areas as these will be the places they are required to build infrastructurally-and not necessarily in the domain that they had hoped for-example: a teacher from a Loretto school and her husband a bank manager ending up doing basic babysitting(as no relevant course prior to this has been undertaken) and roadworks. 2 teachers at a private secondary school here are now cleaners in Alberta. They are too ashamed to come back so are making out that everything's rosy. A relative of mine who owned 2 buses complete with drivers and conductors now waitressing in a shabby pakistani owned restaurant. His parents have to keep sending him money every month. His wife wants to come back with their child as she can't get a job, so where is the progress? Another relative of mine who's had restrictions imposed on him due to processing too many letters of invitiations to illegal mauritians whereby 2 recently were deported ( each married over here with kids yet married over there aswell without their families knowing over here) and who are hellbent on returning as they simply have no desire to do something with their lives over here. Then there is a cousin of mine here who was bragging to all that he's going for good to the UK as he will claim benefits and get a council house and not work thinking he could cheat the system-he returned after 2 weeks as he couldn't hack it.
Yes it is everybody's choice to see if they can make a go of things but one should be aware as to the outcomes, so be prepared to face the consequences. The opportunities that once were do not exist anymore- it is simply too competitive, above and beyond over here. Having a degree means nothing as everyone does as indeed it is reaching this state over here. Illegal immigrants enter at their own peril and its no-ones fault if they don't have enough money to support themselves when they knew the score to begin with. Accomodation for these have to be the designated asylums near the airports holding these illegal immigrants ready for deportation. Coming as students and outstaying their welcome by going into hiding is something else and should be tackled differently, they've paid for their respective courses but then the condition was that after the course they should return. The UK remains a soft touch compared to the likes of France
A lot of the British are aware of the fact that since they colonised 52 countries, it seems only fair that this country is fair in its tolerance in welcoming others and quite rightly so, but then by abusing the system the tolerance is weakening and you can't blame for what's happening.
When people like myself and my family have contributed to England in a major way and can reflect on what we've had to endure, we are now happy to contribute to Mauritius ina pro-active forward thinking way and that is a very rewarding fulfilling sentiment to have-perhaps still not understandable to some who remain still unappreciative and plain ignorant of the potential staring at them in their own country. How sad.
Slavery was long ago abolished-and by the British themselves, so i repeat why willingly enslave yourself for those whose only desire in you is none other than exploitation? Take all of us out of Britiain and Britain will cease to exist. Those like myself are fleeing from the UK-we've paid our dues thankyou very much.

These responses are so typically Mauritian. You have no backbone. In life, you either take it or leave it. If you are treated like terrorists, don't go to UK. There are thousands of Mauritians who are queuing up to take the next plane either legally or illegally. Let's face it, they all do much better than in the rathole back home. So, Razia, wise up. How would you have attended an elite private school and who taught you how to think?

Make your choices and shut up.

The immigration officers at Heathrow are also making their choices eg to admit this fellow who has no return ticket and 100 pounds in his pocket or not. He hardly has the money to stay in a hotel for a few nights. By the way, there is a law in UK that nobody can be homeless. Accomodation must be found for all these immigrants who enter UK and got nowhere to stay.

Simple, if you don't like it, don't go.

Razia, there is racism and communalism in mauritius too. There are so many mauritian politicians who practise at their free will 'scientific communalism' to divide and rule in mauritius. It is only recently that the mauritian parliament has tried to adopt an Equal Opportunity Act inspired from the UK version but in this day and age there is no race relations legislation in force in Mauritius, a multicultural country.
I find it strange and hard to believe how a person like you who pretends to hold UK citizenship seems to be anti-british . Your parents and yourself although you hate Britain that much yet should be thankful and show some respect for a tolerant and democratic country like Britain. Britain is a Christian country with a majority of 97% and as non-christians , your parents had been welcomed into Britain to better themselves and as a result they could afford to give you a private education. Had they not migrated to the UK in the late 60's as you mentioned , they would probably not able to manage to achieve anything.
The United Kingdom, a Christian country , has allowed people from all corners of the world and religious backgrounds to come and migrate here for a better life.
You have also mentioned terrorism!!! it is a good point to note that Britain has been too liberal and tolerant .. if a christian enters some parts of the world with a cross round his neck and worst with a Holy Bible in his luggage , he could be go to jail!!! but in tolerant Britain, there are people holding British Passport, using the generous housing and social benefits facilties yet they are anti-british, anti-christians and want to destroy this country!! What a shame!!

I'm British born but refuse to call myself British or even English-this is something my parents taught myself and my sister and brother. They went over to the UK in the late 60s to do nursing and have done well for themselves. After uni i got married to a guy born in Mauritius though with British nationality before marrying me as he spent over 10 yrs in the UK. We emmigrated to Mauritius over 5 yrs ago and as my husband says-he is like a lion in his country as there's nothing better than being in one's own homeland. For me it is different as i am truly divided. By the way i'm not from east London or from London itself but from the south coast where the area is exclusively white. I went to a renowned private school where everyone was white except me and i can tell you i spent the most horrific time of my life there amidst severe racism and bullying. I always longed for a close Mauritian friend as my culture had always been vastly important to me but grew up into a reclusive solitary person.
Now that i am in Mauritius however i am noticing to what an extent Mauritians on the whole (not all), are hell bent on trying their luck in the UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland etc and i ask myself WHY??? We have to build our country not slave away in another country which will never give us the respect and honour that is our due. My sister and her husband are wanting to emmigrate to Mauritius shortly and my little brother wants to be a pilot for MK! Can you believe the loyalty lol. We identify with our parents' homeland, indeed they are returning soon themselves.
Unfortunately the UK is a known target for illegal immigrants, terrorist activities, you name it so there have to be law enforcements for this. In any case if you have nothing to hide then all is well but the more the few that spoil it for the rest persist, then ultimately the worse it gets.
One cannot simply reyalliate and say ok lets toughen Mauritian visa restrictions-i get properly scrutinized at immigration on arrival in Mauritius and the men sitting at the desks try to make me feel like an intruder but at the end of the day they're just doing their jobs so i don't take it personally, whereas at Heathrow its got to be done that way i'm afraid ( i should know, i used to work there).
We all know or have members of our families living 'illegally' in Europe and frankly that's their choice but then again they have to be prepared to face the consequences. Where i live in Mauritius, there have been a number of Bangladeshis who having completed their work contract have goe into hiding but since they're so verily easy to spot, they have been deported and rightly so-can you imagine how this country would become if all the Toms Dicks and Harrys would all put their mark here? Unfortunately this is what has happened to London, Leicester, Birmingham etc and it really doesn't look good.
Britain should bring out the ID card asap and that alone will be the sole deterrant for those wishing to outstay their welcome. Indeed the British do not make anyone welcome; with their history of raping other countries of their wealth and accumulating these stolen goods and protecting their white territories- Australia, Canada etc, why on earth should we give them more???
Come on everybody lets all unite to make our Mauritius the best-we have the brains, the resources and the passion to stand on our own two feet.

I’m British born but refuse to call myself British or even English-this is something my parents taught myself and my sister and brother. They went over to the UK in the late 60s to do nursing and have done well for themselves. After uni i got married to a guy born in Mauritius though with British nationality before marrying me as he spent over 10 yrs in the UK. We emmigrated to Mauritius over 5 yrs ago and as my husband says-he is like a lion in his country as there’s nothing better than being in one’s own homeland. For me it is different as i am truly divided. By the way i’m not from east London or from London itself but from the south coast where the area is exclusively white.
We identify with our parents’ homeland, indeed they are returning soon themselves.

Whether one like it or not it will be introduced sooner or later to combat terrorism and safeguard jobs in the uk, for the Europeans .Few Mauritian have push their luck too far so that will make it difficult for others .Mauritian have a good standard of education with very few illiterate among the island population so you got to be proud what the government has acheived. We must not forget how we left the island searching for jobs abroad in the sixties in hospitals and post office working for £5.00 a month even then we sacrificed to send money home to Mauritius to support our large families . Mauritian families have received lot of financial help from us in the Uk and from others abroad . In this difficult time in the world, thing are changing so fast we have to accept changes and adapt, most of all respect the laws of a country and make us a good citizen, critisizing it dont get us anywhere . Student who want to study for Phd etc there is other countries offer better opportunities better education and cheaper too is up to the student to see what is available many informations is on the world wide web. As for tourist one must not rely on them. even my daughter after visiting her grandmother in vacoas after 20 years last september ,when Gran ask her when you are coming again, answered Gran there many places in this big world for me to visit ,now in marakesh, then planning 6 months in NEW ZEALAND , people make their own choices so is there ,if you need visa you will get visa in proper way by paying a fees at the moment Uk is losing money from the countries which dont need visa .If one is highly motivated enough it can create wealth and enhance resources . After all we are only a temporary visitor to this world or mother earth we must share and help others .

The illegal immigrant situtation in the UK is beyond belief and taking a massive toll on the country's resources. The UK needs to tighten it's laws for all visitors whether they are Mauritian or not.

The majority of Mauritians that go to the UK as visitors return as planned, but a fair few do not. They stay illegally in the UK "pou sey trace un la vie". This effectively ruins it for the rest of the legitimate Mauritians who only wish to study and visit the UK. Hence the endless list of questions and scrutiny at the immigration offices.

Someone above mentioned getting UK tourists to apply for visa etc. when they come on holiday. Why? About 99.9% of them have no wish to work illegally in Mauritius and they only come for the sand and beaches. Being more strict on tourists will tempt them to other destinations and ruin the tourist industry in Mauritius.
