Navin Ramgoolam issues warning to political nominees
Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam pledged yesterday to launch a major post-election “clean-up” of political nominees who are not performing.

“Maybe I am not supposed to say it at this point, but I will still say it. After the elections, those who have been nominated and who are not working accordingly, won’t have have the time to pack their bags, they will be out the door,” said the prime minister.
His government, he said, had given opportunities to some people to show their worth, but that did not mean they have been given the green light to do “just about anything they want”.
“We want people who work in the best interests of the country and not for their own vested interests. And we will have to clean up this situation in the near future,” said Dr Ramgoolam at the celebrations organised by the Mauritius Arya Ravi Ved Pracharni Sabha in Port Louis to mark Independence Day, which is on March 12.
The prime minister also said he wanted to bring in some new laws and changes to the system – without going into detail.
Dr Ramgoolam said that now election time is approaching, there is “tremendous pressure” building up on him from groups who are asking for their “unmet” demands. He is having to draw up lists on a daily basis to see which group is claiming what.
“In our electoral manifesto, the Labour Party said that we want a Social Alliance that advocates an inclusive Mauritius, that is what we said. The different components of society should be united, that’s what a country should be like.
“We want a society that is built on national unity and where everyone feels part-andparcel of the country,” said Dr Ramgoolam.
Unity, said the prime minister, should be on all issues – saying he wants a united front that reflects national interests.
Dr Ramgoolam said that Mauritians should learn how to stand on their own feet and not wait for government jobs. “We want you to stand up on your feet, do not wait for government jobs. You need to make some effort on your own.”
The Mauritius Arya Ravi Ved Pracharni Sabha is now headed by a new president, Pandit Sangkar. During his speech, he said that the Ravi Ved family had made their contribution to the country’s independence.
“People need to open their minds and see that the association between the association and Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and now Dr Navin Ramgoolam has paid off. You should not look at part of the picture but the global picture.
“When we have a worthy prime minister, we need him now and for the next one to come,” he added. He made a call to the community’s parliamentarians to “stick to the prime minister”, even if there are others who are changing sides.
“If you have a 60-seater bus, would you entrust it to someone who does not have any experience? Don’t you see that he would crash the bus. That is why we need to give it to someone who knows, and amongst us, we have such a person present today,” said Pandit Sangkar.
The Mauritius Arya Ravi Ved Pracharni Sabha also has Kaylash Allgoo as honorary president. During his speech he said that the new management team of the organisation will have two priorities – education and social work. He said that the sabha will soon launch weekend courses for youngsters where they will be able to learn life-skills.
“The sabha will also comment on national issues, for example the introduction of Creole in schools. We have teams working on this and we will submit a report on that to the competent authorities,” said Mr Allgoo.
