Sheena B is a typical 20-year-old finance student in United Kingdom. It is her first year at university, she lives away from home and has a part-time job in a supermarket. Not so typical, however is her means of paying her college fees : prostituting to pay for her studies.

Her parents work as a nurse and a school teacher, putting Sheena B in the awkward position where she is receiving money from her parents, yet they do not earn enough to finance their daughter’s studies.
One night while surfing the Internet, depressed and desperately trying to work out how she was going to pay her rent and bills, Sheena B came across a personal ad: “Young man aged 50 looking for occasional massage. Students welcome.”
And so she went, thinking it would be a once-off. She met a 40-year-old man called Ben in a London hotel, who paid her £250 (Rs12500). It was the first time Sheena B had ever seen a £50 note.
Sheena B explained that her prostitution experiences were not regular, but rather, when she urgently needed the money. It was a “selling point” to tell clients she was a student – they were often men in their fifties and looking for a “Lolita” type. Sometimes they were violent, but absolved themselves of guilt by believing they were helping out poor students.
KotZot find out three reasons why students choose prostitution are : their precarious financial situation, the desire to cut ties with traditional family values and the disillusion with love. For the mauritian students prostitution was a temporary situation, a way to finance their studies and a type of validation. “They want to succeed, to “become someone”, to live comfortably,” explained Sheena B.
18-year-old Salma described her experience of having been out with friends one night, drinking and smoking, when a man asked her to go home with him. “When he told me how much he was offering, I didn’t think too deeply,” she admits, “ […] I could pay my rent and continue to go out.”
Although in the UK it’s possible for students to work part-time, live in a share house and earn enough to pay the bills – as well as save up for an overseas adventure – this general formula does not apply to all mauritian students.
For Sheena B, life continues – but without the prostitution. “I’m still a student and I still have a hard time living,” she admitted. Although financial pressures still exist, she realised that prostituting herself to pay for her studies was not the solution. “It’s really hard to find yourself in front of a fifty-year-old man, naked, and to become an object of fantasy.”

Prostitution is not a hobby, its a necessity to survive!!!! I know people doing this “JOB” as a part time one or simply to get the favour of the boss. Also to compensate the the price of lifestyle, which cant be enjoy with the end of month pay!!
This is an old story… I am surprised that the author thinks it necessary to draw attention to this mauritian woman’s sad and wild living style.She has made that choice. There are many hardworking mauritians in the Uk who are making ends meet by other means. Let us concentrate on them and raise the profile of Mauritius rather than pointing to this woman. Prostitution is a worlwide issue. It does not choose which country, which nationality , which religion one belongs to . I am sure this woman is not the first Mauritian to become a prostitute in the UK and neither will she be the last one. May be the author can ask people how to help prostitutes irrespective of where they are from.
Actually a lot of hindu girls prostitute themselves in the UK and with their boss in Mauritius, this is shame on what we used to call hindu families having traditional backgrounds and too taboo to talk but we should face reality! girls from hindu background religion want freedom and are frustrated but keep on acting at home. This is so sad hindus have reached such a low state, when was the time when it used to be respect of the body. When i was young my parents gave me real freedom of expression which did not force me to act. I can understand that life is so hard in the UK and everything is expensive. But if you cannot afford to live , pay your rent, bills and university fees it is much better for you to return back home. Hi ,i businessman leave in europe since long time and have 2 children . can just understand as just not mauritian girl ,there is lot of girl and women even european are doing it since they do not know what to do ,loosing their job loan to pay ,children school and food etc.It’s not like in Mru where you have parents to help you.Here you have to survive doing all kind of job if you get it,else you have do something else to pay where you live and to have something to eat.That is for men also . Hi all, though i may feel for the girl above, i simply do not understand why she chose to study abroad and above else in the UK knowing well her financial status. Ironically, she is a finance student… What was the urge to study abroad? There are universities in Mauritius that caters for a wide range of disciplines. You can even follow distance learning from prestigious overseas universities. Prostitution has been here since the beginning of time; women practiced it by obligations & needs. Today sex activity on university campus is common, for self gratification, nothing to do with needs. No one has to leave Mauritius to study in the UK, knowing pretty well how expensive & dificult life can be & what university, most of them don’t even worth the pamflets they advertise on; We have great institutions in Mauritius like the university at le Reduits which attracts students from all over Africa, Asia etc.
