Infotech 2008 – Living in the Digital World
“Living the digital world” is the theme chosen for the Infotech 2008 scheduled to be held at the Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre from August 7 to 10. Some 75,000 Mauritians are expected to visit the salon.
Innovation and pragmatism will be the master words of this year’s show, which has taken a clear regional perspective with the participation of an increasing number of foreign exhibitors. A number of innovations– ICT Career Fair, new awards, a regional conference and a live call centre demonstration– have been scheduled.
The exhibition will house some 52 local participants among which are 10 foreign companies from countries such as Malaysia, Reunion, South Africa, Palestine, Ethiopia, Hong Kong and the Indian Ocean Commission countries.
An ICT regional conference will also be held on August 7 and 8 and four topics will be addressed: E-Government-rationales, processes and implementation, ICT for sectorial exploitation: enhancing growth through ICT, Outsourcing and offshoring- challenges facing Africa and Adopting an information security culture.
Some 25 speakers of international repute from South Africa, Germany, India, Malaysia, the USA, Tunisia, the UK, Switzerland and USA will share their experience with the local entrepreneurs and sector experts.
Moreover, potential buyers, customers, investors,
outsources and entrepreneurs among others from the African continent will be present. Provisions have been made by the National Computer Board for meetings of local actors with the international delegates.
To encourage local participation and recognition of Mauritian talents in the ICT field a third award will be introduced in the next Infotech edition : the ICT Professional of the Year Award. Some 10 applicants are competing for this award which is open to all Mauritians involved in the ICT sector and is intended to recognise the outstanding achievement in and contributions to the development of an ICT-based society in Mauritius.
For the first time this year, Infotech will include an ICT Career Fair.
“There is a need for adequate training. The ICT sector is suffering from an acute lack of qualified and trained man power. This career fair will help create awareness of job prospects in the ICT sector to the local job seekers,” says Newraj Burton, Director of the National Computer Board.
The fair is being organised in collaboration with the Outsourcing and Telecommunications Association of Mauritius(OTAM), and will include companies that are seeking manpower in ICT.
Another innovation for the Infotech 2008 edition is the Call Centre Demo, which will be hosted in a dedicated space of some 100 square metres. The demo will consist of live demonstrations of call centre operations and will be sponsored by Infinity and Euro CRM.
Pour certains, le salon a été l’occasion de découvrir les nouvelles tendances en matière d’informatique et de faire de bonnes affaires. Quant aux jeunes, ils ont été plutôt satisfaits par les produits proposés. “C’est la deuxième année consécutive que je viens au salon Infotech. Ce qui nous attire le plus, nous les jeunes, ce sont les gadgets qu’on a la chance de découvrir ici”, déclare N.B, 16 ans. Un enthousiasme partagé par une autre jeune de 16 ans. “C’est super. Je suis ici pour regarder les ordinateurs portables et les appareils photo. Ils sont au-delà de mes espérances puisque les prix sont abordables avec des facilités de paiement. C’est la première fois que je vi-site le salon et je trouve l’animation très cool !” dit cette ado.
D’autres cependant sont restés sur leur faim. Certains visiteurs ont critiqué le nombre peu élevé de stands. D’autres ont comparé ce 15e Infotech à l’édition précédente, qu’ils ont trouvée à la hauteur de leurs espérances. A l’instar de Pravin, 27 ans, assistant ingénieur, Infotech 2008 n’aura pas séduit. “Je suis venu pour chercher un nouveau laptop. Mais les laptops les plus sophistiqués que j’ai vus sur des sites Internet ne sont pas présents dans ce salon. Je suis un peu déçu. Je m’attendais à être ébloui par la technologie, mais c’est plutôt le contraire”, souligne le jeune homme.
Newrajlall Burton, président du conseil d’administration du National Computer Board, organisateur du salon Infotech, se dit satisfait de cette nouvelle édition. Pour lui, les objectifs ont été atteints. La grand-messe de l’informatique a attiré cette année plus de 65 000 visiteurs. Les nombreux geeks s’attendent cependant à ce que la 16e édition les fasse encore plus rêver.
