At a press conference yesterday, the former police commissioner said that he had all the necessary skills to help them and that the state had previously spent lot of money to put them through courses abroad to help restore law and security.

He was speaking the day after a question was brought up during the question and answer session at the National Assembly on police assaults.

Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam gave figures in parliament which show that there were 158 reported cases of assault on police officers from December 2008 to March 30, including 19 cases involving offensive weapons.

“During the past few weeks, a number of assaults have been perpetrated on police officers during the performance of their duties and this demonstrates a complete lack of respect for lawful authorities. Such behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” Ramgoolam told parliament.

Speaking on Wednesday, Dayal said it was very serious that four officers in the last two weeks had been assaulted while performing their duties.

“It is an indication of the degeneration of the law and security for me. I insist on urgent measures,” he said.

The leader of the MDN also called for an inquiry into the Shoprite commercial centre project at Rose-Belle.

He questioned why there was no tender for the allocation of state lands to Shoprite. He also wanted to know how it had been possible that agricultural land had been converted to allow the construction of this new shopping centre. Speaking about the dissolving of parliament, Dayal said the MDN had two options – either to go it alone in the general election or to seek an electoral alliance, to which he said that “all political options are open.”

He questioned why the MMM continued to negotiate with the Labour Party , while they had supported the MSM during the last elections at Quartier Militaire.
