For Deepa Bhookhun, finding a husband only means sex

« I personally remember some dimwit writing to my editor in-chief in reaction to a column I had written on the Satanic Verses. This poor excuse for a man said that if I was such a fan of Rushdie, then maybe I should apply to be part of his harem. I’ll spare you the other repugnant details but the letter was overtly sexual in content – the man had no other arguments and obviously thought that insulting me was the best way to deal with women “like me.” », Deepa Bhookhun’s « Shut up and find a husband ! », l’Express of 15th August 2008.
deepa bhookhun

In Ms Bhookhun’s article « Shut up and find a husband ! », she was commenting on Paul Bérenger’s alleged following words uttered in the direction of Nita Deerpalsing : « Shut up! Find her a husband! », in Parliament on Tuesday 12th Aug 08.  But in l’Express dated 13th Aug 08, the ‘exact’ words of Bérenger were « Rod enn mari pou li marie do !», while in le Mauricien of 16th Au 08, the words were « Be al get enn mari pou to marye ! ».  Athough those three versions may be interpreted in slightly different ways, a reasonable person would certainly not attach any form or sexual or pornographic connotation to them.

However, Ms Bhookhun’s Rushdie-inspired interpretation made her argue that because Ms Deerpalsing is an unmarried a woman speaking her mind, Bérenger made as if she were « sexually frustrated ».  Firstly, Ms Bhookhun’s argument is deeply flawed because, as a very pro-Rushdie modern woman herself, she can easily testify that a woman does not need to find a husband for sexual gratification.  It appears that her own obsession (perhaps frustration) with sex has pushed her to associate Bérenger’s comments with sex.  Secondly, Bérenger’s comments have absolutely nothing to do with the pornography, filth and blasphemy of Salman Rushdie in The Satanic Verses, book which Ms Bhookhun was glorifying and effectively advising people, in her article « Satanic whatever » [l’Express, 16 June 2008], to buy or download from the net and read and enjoy.

My reply entitled « Deepa Bookhun and her satanic obscenity » to her article « Satanic whatever » was sent to the editor-in-chief of l’Express on 25th June 2008 but still unpublished.  However, the response was published in the Star dated 29th June 2008, only to find Ms Bhookhun responding in l’Express of 7th July 2008 under the title « What about me ! » in which she said she was « very upset » since she was disliked by various people who think she is « a satanic girl who simply detests Muslims and the voix Creole ».  She believed that by mixing issues, she would be able to noyer le poisson.  This is both wrong and unprofessional, especially since l’Express has not published my response.

In a second reminder by email dated 7th July 2008 to the editor-in-chief of l’Express, copied to Ms Bhookhun et al, I pushed the case forward for the publication of my response to Ms Bhookhun given her support for and recommendation of The Satanic Verses, a pornographic, blasphemous and deeply offensive book against Islam and Muslims.  I said the following to the editor-in-chief, Mr Raj Meetarbhan :

«  Rushdie speaks of the enjoyment of anal sex with women.  If Ms Bhookhun enjoys such sex, or would like to form part in Rushdie’s Satanic Verses brothel, she can contact Rushdie whose four wives have left him, most probably because he is a pervert.  If she has read the Satanic Verses  she will know what this means, and in what context it has been stated.  She can read the Satanic Verses at night with one hand in the comfort of her own home.  But she should not glorify such a blasphemous book which is so offensive to Muslims, nor should she incite people to obtain copies of it given that it has been banned in Mauritius. »

I also requested the editor to publish my letter.  Although this too was never published, Ms Bhookhun cowardly refers to it in « Shut up and find a husband ! » without mentioning my name and makes a most ridiculous and misleading reply.  The context of my response has absolutely nothing to do with the opposition politics of Paul Bérenger in Parliament.  Ms Bhookhun is totally and utterly wrong in trying to compare herself with Ms Deerpalsing who, to my knowledge, never tried to promote Rushdie’s pornographic material.

The sexual analogy in my letter dated 7th July 2008 to the editor-in-chief of l’Express has to do with the depraved sexual nature and blasphemy of The Satanic Verses, which book Ms Bhookhun was promoting, and not intended to insult her as she alleges.  She is the one who is insulting Islam and Muslims by promoting Rushdie’s pornographic book from which she has ‘learnt’ so much that she now believes she is not a « dimwit » anymore, especially as she has free access to the columns of l’Express to comment on my unpublished letter without even acknowledging my name.

I was asking if Ms Bhookhun « would like to form part in Rushdie’s Satanic Verses brothel » and never asked her « to apply to be part of his harem ».  I was talking about the book and made no mention of Rushdie’s harem.  I did not even know he had one.  I take it Ms Bhookhun is speaking en connaissance de cause.  Ziska copier li pas conner !  If Ms Bhookhun wants Salman Rushdie to teach her « a thing or two » as she states in « Satanic whatever », it is entirely up to her to apply as she knows what sort of a woman she is more than anybody else : « women “like me” », she says.  How Ms Bhookhun obtains her sexual gratifications is entirely up to her, but when she promotes the filth and blasphemy of Rushdie people are bound to question her own sexual preferences and dislike of the Holy Prophet of Islam as depicted by Salman Rushdie on whose head rests a death sentence.  However, this has nothing to do with Paul Bérenger’s comments towards Nita Deerpalsing in Parliament, although it is relevant to her love of Rushdie’s Satanic Verses, meaning the book and not Rushdie’s ‘harem’ as she alleges.

Miss Bhookun calls herself journalist but i would call her a braconier.

and yeah….even a sixth grader would write better english than her….this is a fact…as far as her approval and promotional of salman rushdie is concerned…it’s a matter of appreciation but promoting it in Mauritius is like going against the law because the book is banned overthere..I am surprise that no one from the CCID has visited her office yet or it that she is the mouthpiece of the government at La Sentinelle. Bceause by all mean her boss has one foot in the government and another is the opposition..and finally, where was Deepa Bhookun when Danielle Perrier was cursed at by Deerpalsingh the uncle in parliament and was slapped by jean claude barbien and also when Maya Hanomanjee was insulted as well…Deepa Bhhokun is a digrace to journalism and would rather as you mentioned joined the harem of Rushdie, may be this is what she craves for…oh well the lastest wife of Salman left her so Deepa Bhookun might as well

In all fairness, Deepa is just one of many sad case women in her late twenties or early thirties who are forced to write the way she does in order to gain the recognition she craves for. She purposely causes controversy to give herself the fame and importance she sees in her counterparts (or boyfriend(S), in order to match them.

Unfortunately, this is backfiring in a pretty severe way as she is clearly making herself an object of ridicule, not only in her personal life where she is used as some type of puppet on a string. I say puppet on a string as this chap (whoever he is, be it Sanjay Bhuckory or anyone else who screws her dilligently) is keeping her hanging on by feeding news in order to promote himself in a good light.

A real journalist is undisputable. it is unfair to belittle the grand title of journalism in associaation of such a person as Ms Bhhokhun. She may be regarded as a gossip columinist at the most or just an opinionated person who is clearly obsessed with herself, but certainly do not regard her in the same category as journalism. Please. It is an insult to the trade.

Let’s be fair. Deepa Bhookhun is not one to be blamed. She is a victim of her own surroundings and thinking. Deepa is not a journalist. She can be regarded as a gossip columnist or an opinionated writer at the most. Her articles are distorted and muddled. This should not be confused with the skillful craft of journalism. Therefore please do not taint this prestigious profession in the same context of such a comedy outbursts of a woman in her late twenties crying out for attention. She is using controversy to gain the recognition she is clearly craving for. If this means being Sanjay Bhuckory’s ‘Puppet on the string’ or any other men out there who are interested in promoting themselves by using her, she may be under the influence that she is loved instead of being used by these so called powerful man. What Deepa is doing is striving to be and match them. She should therefore take a reality check and see that she is not on the same platform and will never be.

I have known Deepa since she attempted studying at Kingston University. I say attempted as she never actually passed her degree although she tried very hard. But lucky for her, her father’s contacts got her in the right places.

However, if she is being protected by Sanjay Bhuckory who may be her boyfriend or attempted ‘kept’ woman as Deepa may like to think, then it is up to Deepa and the intelligence I hope she has to come clear in public and relate her relationship with him openly.

Sanjay Bhuckory is a known womaniser. He’ll sleep around and play happy families for social status. But gutless women like Deepa allow him to get away with it.

However, Deepa as you say, live and let live.

Journalism?? My foot! This poor excuse for a woman has used her job to interview only the men in top leadership positions. Why?? Obvious to all except herself. She thrives on attention from men and is dying to be recognised by them. So she thrusts herself in the supposed limelight. So lets name a few..well of course, we start with the obvious Chairman S Bhuckory. But he is no longer. So she moves on to Manoj Ujoodha then Yatin Varma Arvin Boollell…oh the list goes on. Deepa..get yourself a reality cHeck woman. Your articles are a joke. The only person that takes them seriously are you.And that is the general consensus of us all the University of Mauritius. Come down and see for yourself if you have the guts. You will be overwhelmed by the reality of what we truly think at your shit for brains technique. Oh and by the way.. do something useful..make us a cup of tea..!

I am shocked by the kind of monstrous remarks people have been writing about Deepa. I work as a English language teacher and i can assure you all that she writes correct English that we all understand. Let us also not forget the basics of democracy, she has the right to express her views. I feel her frankness is disturbing petty conventional minds… high time you people change your understanding of sex and relationships. Stop peeping into private lives and spitting venom. learn to respect the Mauritian woman who has the courage to speak out lod and clear.

well, to pas capave generalise les choses; Meet MAN who can be a friend, a mentor, a guide; who can give his shoulder when you are in need. who can lead you and counsel you . YES DEAR such man exist find it Within you, your heart. GOD gives us every thing’ every thing just every thing

  19. PB

…er note for Preetee Rughhonauth who claims to work as an English language teacher…Loud is spelt L O U D..not lod and also always begin your sentences with a capital ( the section where you have inserted – learn to respect..) Also if your speaking about Mauritian woman – I think you mean women not woman as in plural and have as opposed to has.

Of course you understand Deepa’s poor English. Your just as bad! And you call yourself a teacher. I am scared on behalf of the Mauritian nation. But of course, you must be Deepa’s best friend. Who else but rubbish would befriend her???

…..so, this piss-pathetic excuse for a journo is keen to convince us that she’s for progress, womens’ rights, blah, blah, blah. A common thread that I have found in her scribbles seem to be a predicliction for islamophobic articles; such as her pro-RushDIE ramblings, as well as a disgusting attack on Maulana Jamil Chooramun (L’Express, 30/03/07). Would this cheap ‘two a penny hack’ have dared spew her hatred on lets say, either a Hindu or Catholic/Chrisitian priest? Pehaps shes awaiting a ‘fatwa’ so that she can claim asylum in Europe or somewhere?
In the meanwhile both verbal and ‘horizontal’ gymnastics (erhem, erhem) are paying her bills if nothing else.

THE REAL CULPRIT IS RAJ MEETARBHAN. If Meetarbhan had not boycotted my legitimate reply to Ms Bhookhun, all this would not have happened.

Thank you all for your comments. However, I do feel that some remarks have gone much too far. Preetee Rughoonauth is right to say that Ms Bhookhun has the right to express her views, but so does everyone else. Ms Bhookhun was not merely expressing her views, she was a promoting a pornographic and blasphemous book offensive to over a billion people. I do not believe she even read Rushdie’s Satanic Verses. If she did, I doubt if she understood it. If Rushdie had written a similar book about Christianity and Jesus Christ and Christians want the book banned and the author brought to justice, why would a non-Christian promote the book? On the contrary, non-Christians should respect the wishes of Christians in matters which personally affect them, their faith and their holy figures unless those wishes are harmful to others. The banning of pornographic, obscene and blasphemous material cannot be regarded as harmful.

Rightly said Mr Rafic. We live in a beautiful but fragile democracy where it is all too easy to destroy that which makes our cosmopolitan nation the harmonious country that it is. I’m a great believer in the freedom of speech but the freedom to speak is not a licence to insult that which others hold dear. I love my religion but i also love my neighbour be he a hindu, christian or even an atheist and i would never venture to say anything unwarranted towards them just for my own self gratification. If people think you are anti-muslim Miss satanic its because its all too easy to read between the lines and there is never smoke without fire in Mauritius. In any case those who know you know exactly who you are. A waste of time!
