Being Mauritian and Gay
One of our recent tales revolved around two lesbian lovers who asked police to help them fight their parent’s wishes and stay together. They didn’t.
Today, we came across a piece that reiterates much of the same: Mauritius still maintains a colonial era ban on homosexuality, the majority of society doesn’t approve, What’s different about this particular piece is that it focusses on the idea of faggotry as a punishment – that is, gay men and women often feel that they’re paying the price for a wrong-doing. Homos, then, tend to eschew one another.
Yes, there are gay clubs and bars and the such, but no neighborhoods like Chelsea or Brighton, for gays fear being collectively stigmatized. Fear may permeate gay life in Mauritius, but not all gays live in such terrified conditions.
Nazeer Sadoo Buccus mauritian of 31 years old has been sharing his life with Lionel Provert a French Teacher. He left mauritius to come to europe to live freely as a gay. Nazeer made the headline due to his visa status in france.
The other most recent case we have seen was of Virginie who lives in france and fell in love with a native. Kate and virginie loved each other but the parents of Kate even kidnapped her since they did not liked the relationship!
Are Mauritians becoming less tolerant towards the gay community?
It seems that even the most out and proud of gay men can still have their hang-ups. Even big ol’ queers such as ourselves – we like to cuddle.
I believe that i can’t expect everyone to think like me and be like me. Gays do not ask to accept them. Just let live without being continously prosceuted and tagged by Names…
Lesbian, gay, and bisexual people worldwide encounter extensive prejudice, discrimination, and violence because of their sexual orientation. Intense prejudice against lesbians, gay men, and bisexual people was widespread throughout much of the 20th century. Public opinion studies over the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s routinely showed that, among large segments of the public, lesbian, gay, and bisexual people were the target of strongly held negative attitudes. More recently, public opinion has increasingly opposed sexual orientation discrimination, but expressions of hostility toward lesbians and gay men remain common in contemporary Mauritian society. Prejudice against bisexuals appears to exist at comparable levels. In fact, bisexual individuals may face discrimination from some lesbian and gay people as well as from heterosexual people.
Sexual orientation discrimination takes many forms. Severe antigay prejudice is reflected in the high rate of harassment and violence directed toward lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals in American society. Numerous surveys indicate that verbal harassment and abuse are nearly universal experiences among lesbian, gay, and bisexual people. Also, discrimination against lesbian, gay, and bisexual people in employment and housing appears to remain widespread.
The HIV/AIDS pandemic is another area in which prejudice and discrimination against lesbian, gay, and bisexual people have had negative effects. Early in the pandemic, the assumption that HIV/AIDS was a “gay disease” contributed to the delay in addressing the massive social upheaval that AIDS would generate. Gay and bisexual men have been disproportionately affected by this disease. The association of HIV/AIDS with gay and bisexual men and the inaccurate belief that some people held that all gay and bisexual men were infected served to further stigmatize lesbian, gay, and bisexual people.
People still belive that HIV/ADIS is a “Gay disease” but let me remind you that the world population for HIV/ADIS is among HETROSEXUALS rather than Gays…
We live in a supposedly democratic country so live and let live.
So, just be nice and move on.Get you own life and don’t use mine…..
I believe that everybody has their right to love and live with the one they love. A girl with another girl or a guy with another guy is not a shame. I can even say that those people who are fighting for their sexuality are brave and should be proud of themselves.
What is our problem if two gay or lesbienne wish to be together? None of our business isnt it. Of course it is strange and a bit weird to see them kissing on the road but hey they feel the same way wen they see a guy and a gurl kissing.
The community and society shudnt say anything about that because it is not their business and should just accept the fact that it happens and it is happening! Even god cant do anything about tht.

For that i appreciate that to some extend My Beautiful MAuritius is not like here…..we can do and live our lifes…

Its nice to see more and more people are coming out in Mauritius. My parents are Mauritian and I was born in the UK but however my mum decided to go back to Mauritius. I realised that I didn’t like girls and I was only 15. When growing up it wasn’t easy for me as I come from a muslim family as well and no-one know about me being gay. When I came back to the UK, I met new people and I am glad that I have and it has made me become a happier person and it is not a problem here being gay but it is a crime being homophobic! Mauritius needs to open their eyes a little more. Why does it bother people that much that someone goes out with the same sex? Come on get a life people! If a member of your family went out with the same sex, just be happy for them, do you want them to live a fake & unhappy life? Wanting them dead? Not too long ago I read an article where two young teenage boys in Iran were caught kissing the outcome… they were both hung to death. You always read or hear similar stories. Some people, Countries & EVEN Religion are ignorant, how about that for a statement!

Hi there, Hey I’m really glad about all these comments very good. But I know how the mauritian mentality is very hard to understand and very difficult to follow. Was just wondering about what can we do us gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transexuals and tranvestites to open these people’s eyes how other countries are comparing to ours. I thing personally if we all put effort in it and maybe if we get help from other countries where homosexuality is legal, I’m sure we can get to where we want a lot faster. What you think guys?

Elo everyone. Each of us seem to have an opinion, not necessarily diverging or converging to wat vanessa posted. Am gay and a closeted one, sad to say. It’s not easy to live a gay life in Mauritius. Every gay/ bi here will surely agree with me but most of all I did choose to be one. Contrary to some of you who think that one becomes gay by choice then sadly I disagree with you. I have friends (straight) ones I hang around. Maybe they guess about my orientation but seem they do not care. I try to have a full, joyful life but it is not easy. My sex life is totally void. So you can guess how life can be for a gay in Mauritius….

Hey Jevin I do understand what you trying to say but thing is that you are just giving a point of view from your sexuality. If you learn a bit more on sexuality you’ll find out that there’s different type of sexuality. There are lots of things which are kept taboo and sexuality is one of them where only heterosexual which is open. It’s not about (la manche and what you can give to girls that we are talking about, it’s about what the person really wants to do and feels happy about it. Would you do something that you don’t like doing even if another person likes doing it? Would you like to eat something that you don’t like eating even if another person likes eating it? We gays are not saying to you to become gay, we are just trying to make people to become open minded of how we are and of what we feel happy to do. Ki manier? London based female lesbian here…some interesting comments and some really positive stuff. I was so delighted to have stumbled across this sight…what a little gem! I remember when I first discovered I was gay, I was disgusted with myself, ashamed and tried my best to like boys…but I failed terribley! I never felt like I could be me, for years I was unhappy, and the I met my current partner. I had been with her for over a year and couldn’t lie anymore, something just snapped…I went on a spree of outing myself to everyone, and the more inappropriate people found it, the more certain I became. Anyway to cut a long story short, I told my family…mum, sister, uncle, auntie the lot! I live with my partner and we have been together for 6 years, however she has not told her family…I think what I am trying to say is that it’s ok to be out and it’s ok to be in the closet…as long as you do what you have to do…you only live once! Last year I marched in my police uniform with other uniformed british serrvices at London Gay Pride…this year my mum and I took part in an exhibition to talk about coming out and being gay…it has been a long road to get to where we are now. You must take a stand, it’s only when we stand together that we can change atitudes. First of all i must say how happy i am that so many people in the gay society has come forward to express their concerns and thoughts. Like all of you already know we’re not really bothered about what heterosexuals think about us and it just shows how immature and unreasonable they’re being. Or could it just be jealousy and envy of being so confident and stand up for our rights. We’re all fighters in our own way and am afraid that it just can’t be helped that people still think in this same old fashion way probably like their parents who most likely are the same type of people. But hetero’s GROW UP!! Homosexuality started when you weren’t even born maybe even before the time their parents were born and it ‘s just shocking that even the obvious is difficult to take in. So my theory has proven right that they have indeed inherit the genes of stupidity from their family background. Anyways words will not really make any difference and all we can do is just hope that the new generation will be a bit more tolerant towards the gay society or else…..Who Cares..we Don’t!! 1. it is not hard being gay in mauritius, i am gay, i’ve always lived here i know. although it may be hard if ur really effeminate cause people might tease or mock, but thats the same all over the world so mru is no big deal
2. there can’t be a gay neighborhood in mauritius because the island is too small and there aren;t enough people
so yea.. mauritius is gay tolerant to a certain point. it’s a tiny african developing country and i think it’s pretty advanced in terms of sexual orientation acceptation for its status and size. the examples given above are extreme cases and a minuscule minority so they cant be used to describe the reality of the country. there are a lot of gay couples on the island, some open, some hidden; but nevertheless existent. mauritius has a lot of religions and cultures so yea.. it might be pretty confusing finding a general opinion but the situation is definitely not as bad as u apparently want to make it seem…

I just wanna say that the same way we do not choose our parents, the same way one does not choose his/her sexual orientation. They do not need ‘a traitement de faveur’ as such but they only want to be treated as every human being should. They are not animals. As far as I know we are born free and have the same equal rights. Then why is it that the gay has to hide and live? Why does he/her has to remain quiet and accept all abuses??? Hey guys remind me, are we still living at the stone age or what??!! LOL!!
